２００８年同志社大学ＥＳＳ東京ＯＢ会開催報告

　同志社ESS東京OB会の年次大会が、6月14日正午ホテル銀座ラフィナートで開催され、これまでで最多の89人が参加、この日の講師で外務省儀典長・楠本祐一さん(46年法卒Ｅグループ)を囲んで大いに盛り上がった。

　まず恒例の集合写真を撮ったあと、南　武美さん(36年卒)の総合司会で開会、さっそく31年卒の千野勝巳先輩が力強く乾杯の音頭を取った。立食パーティの各テーブルには卒業年度順に番号がつけられ、参加者同士が自然に顔を会わせ、気軽に情報交換ができるように工夫された。

　食事が一段落したところで、世話人会を代表して桑田泰弘さん(40年卒)が挨拶に立ち、「こんなに大勢の人が集まり、メンバーの結束力を誇らしく思う。同時にこの力を継続していく責任を感じる。」と述べ、さらに新島襄がニューイングランドの教会で、帰りの汽車賃２ドルを寄付したエピソードを紹介し、「東京OB会もこれに習って母校のための一助として力になろう」と呼びかけた。

　続いて「同志社と日本外交官としての私」と題して楠本儀典長の特別講演が行われた。「在外公館の大使を含め、日本に帰っては国賓、公賓の招聘はもとより数々の国際親善の舞台で37年間学んできた。そしてしみじみと日本人に生まれ育った幸せを感じている。今日、経済大国日本がアジア・アフリカをはじめ発展途上国から慕われている理由は日本のやさしさにある。日本に助けてもらっても植民地化の心配がない。」ということもあるらしい。「自分は日々日本の歴史・文化について学習することを課している。」

　京都という文化的環境で同志社中学・高校・大学と新島スピリッツと自由を満喫した外交官の言葉に気負いはない。昨今、かしましい小学校英語教育についても、「子供たちが英語に関心を持つような会話を中心とした教育のやり方がポイントだ。全国民を英語漬けにすることではなく政治家、ビジネスマン、役人を問わず、とりわけその任にある者は堂々と世界と渡り合える英語力を身につけていることが期待されている。」ということである。

　最後のステージでは、34年卒の神田惣介さんがESSの歴史について懐かしみ、46年卒の高原直樹さんはDoshisha Chimesが京都府立図書館に納入された報告、ジャーナル時代の苦労話や思い出を語った。また３６年卒の赤松勉さんからスペインでフラメンコの研究で活躍している同期生の青木和美さんの翻訳本の紹介なども行われた。そして今回初参加のメンバー14人が自己紹介をして、ESSソングとカレッジソングの大合唱となった。

　世話人会のデスクには多額の浄財が詰まった箱が残されていたことを特筆しておきたい。

Good afternoon, our honorable guest, Ambassador Kusumoto, fellow members of Doshisha ESS family, my friends, ladies and gentlemen,

It is indeed my privilege and pleasure to be here today and appreciate your participation into this Doshisha ESS reunion of the year, 2008. My special thanks are due to Ambassador Kusumoto for sharing his time with us and
delivering an exclusive speech on Japanese diplomacy.

Today I wish to announce two important news to each and everyone of you. First, it is striking to note that this year’s participants into this ESS reunion accounted for more than 90 members. This is an all time high record
in our OB kai history in Tokyo. Next year we may most probably expect more than 100 ESS alumni from the class of 1950’s to that of 2000’s .

To cope up with this growing needs we wish to strengthen our OB kai committee inviting Ms. Sato of the class of 1992 and Mr. Kishiwada of the class of 1960, who have kindly accepted our committee request for joining. Thank you very much indeed Sato-san and Kishiwada-san.

Second, it is always an old but a new theme of discussion what we can do to our alma mater, Doshisha, as alumni. We came across with a dramatic scene that a farmer donated two dollars instead of buying a train ticket back home when Neejima-sensei delivered a speech in a small New England church, opening up his intension of establishing a school in Japan.

We have no hesitation to imitate a good practice and all ESS committee members are determined to follow this farmer’s suit. Therefore, we have prepared a donation box and wish to continue this “ Contribution-to-Alma Mater-campaign” every year from this year onward. We do really hope that you will understand the true spirit of this move and extend your generosity and cooperation to this effect.

２００７年同志社大学ESS 東京OB会開催報告

　６月９日お天気に恵まれ和光の時計台を見渡すサッポロ銀座ホールでESS東京OB会が開かれました。

　６７名の参加を得て、一年ぶりの再会で和やかな歓談の輪が広がりました。

　お忙しいスケジュールの中、出席いただいた八田学長は、同志社の現状、未来の計画などお人柄そのまま楽しく、ざっくばらんにお話くださいました。

　立命館前総長から同志社に追い越されないように頑張らないとと言われたそうで、今まで立命に追い越された覚えはないのだけれどと苦笑されていました。他にも小学校の学校給食における宝ヶ池プリンスホテル（同志社）と大津プリンスホテル（立命）の競争など様々な裏話を耳にすることが出来ました。

　同志社と立命館のよきライバル関係は両者の発展のみならず京都の教育水準の向上に寄与しているようです。

　今年の特別講師は３５年度の上野晋氏でした。

　全日空時代日本はじめ香港やシンガポール等海外でも活躍された上野さんのお話は皇室の話題から社会主義のお国柄、ワインやシャンパンのお話まで硬軟とりまぜバラエティに富み、リタイア後も勉学に勤しまれるそのエネルギーと博識ぶりに感嘆しました。

　シャンパングラスの形状はマリーアントワネットの乳房に由来するので、グラス部分を手のひらでつつむように持つことはゆめゆめなさらないようにとのお話には皆納得の大笑いでした。

　昨年の特別講師は米国で御活躍の佐野吉弘氏のM&Aのお話、一昨年は増永朋子さんの熟年離婚のお話とESSの人材の豊かさに毎年驚きと誇りを感じる特別講演です。

　年代も経歴も種々で、卒業以来英語に馴染みの人馴染みの無い人色々のOBメンバーですが、新島精神を基に「同志社」「ESS」というキーワードが強い絆となっていることにいつも感謝する会です。

　またの再会とメンバーの活躍を期して散会となりました。

　Good afternoon our honorable guests, Mr. Hatta, President of Doshisha University and Mr. Ueno, guest speaker, fellow members of Doshisha ESS family, my friends, ladies and gentlemen.

　It is indeed my greatest pleasure to be present here today and share the culmination of joyful time with all of you at Doshisha ESS Tokyo Reunion 2007. This wonderful event has been enabled by each and every one of you and is nothing but a cream of your participation. My million thanks are due to you all.

　We have today altogether 67 ESS alumni friends and this is our all time high record. In 2003 we had only 31 members participating, 41 in 2004, 61 each in both 2005 and 2006. You may safely say that this increase is explicitly an excellent sign for Doshisha ESS Tokyo OB-kai to expand.

　In order to cope up with future expansion we need to plan and figure out a series of new and fresh ideas by that we can provide you with many interesting programs and namely a nicer reunion than ever. In my term, the nicer reunion means the opportunity when “well blended” cross communication and friendship will take a shape instantly on the spot without any difficulty.

　Just imagine the case that any Senpai member of the class of 1953 has no hesitation to talk , discuss and assimilate as a friend easily with younger Heisei graduates. Frankly, this segment of Heisei friends is still very shallow and thin in this party and we are in great need to develop their participation by providing some charming programs to them.

　With the above view in mind I wish to strengthen our ESS organizing committee in the following manner:

　First, we shall appoint and invite 3 more committee members to strengthen the depth and width of our future planning. Mr. Aratani of the class of 1959, Mr. Kondo of 1969 and Ms. Suzuki of 1971.

　Secondly, we shall appoint Mr. Suzuki as Vice Chairman of the committee who has rich experiences in implementing and operating so many kinds of reunions in the past.

　Ladies and gentlemen, the last but not the least, I thank you very much again for your participation today and wish to see you all again next year.
